Why
Sharpen Your Blades?
“If you sharpen your hoe before you begin, you
won’t be nearly as tired when
you get to the end of the row.” That is
the advice of a no-nonsense
farmer, my father. A sharp hoe easily slices away the unwanted weeds
and grass
that is robbing the crop of nutrients and moisture. A dull hoe will
still work,
but you have to put out a lot more effort and your arms will become
tired a lot
sooner. I don’t know if my father considered his advice
anything more than
teaching his son how to prepare for a hard day’s work in the
field. But years
later, while preparing for ministry in Christian education, I learned
that this
same wisdom is found in the Bible. “If the ax is
dull and its edge
unsharpened, more strength is needed but skill will bring
success.” (Ecclesiastes
10:10) NIV. If you feel dull, burned out, or like you have
“lost your
edge” you need to sharpen up! My father also carried a file
in his hip pocket
in order to sharpen the hoe whenever it became dull.
